As in all our itineraries, Irtu Bike Park is the starting point.
Let’s follow SP59 road leaving the sunrise behind: the surface conditions are pretty good, a smooth ride is allowed. Pastures, olive groves and vineyards colors the landscape in ever-changing shades, according to time and season.
After crossing the Getterello stream, turn right and take the road known as “strada della bonifica (reclamation)”. This stretch is undoubtedly difficult to ride, thanks to large and deep holes on the ground, but the landscape is quite unique and typical at the same time: you will cycle on a almost flat strip of land (!!!) and admire a rural countryside of small family-run plots .
The first 4 kms with almost no difference in height are followed by a 1 km climb that will serve to reach the entrance of Vallefiorita (Santulia), a village that is famous for olive oil production. A refreshing and relaxing slight descent will lead you to the last effort: the short but intense arrival in Squillace.
Here you will find various point of interest: the Norman Castle, several churches and Cassiodoro’s home for art and history passionateS; pottery shops to take home a piece of centuries-old tradition. And obviously, restaurants, taverns and sandwich bars to taste our region again and again.
So, don’t miss the chance to take a short walk and a typical Calabrian aperitif.
To complete the cycling experience, ride the cobbled street Corso Guglielmo Pepe up to the curve of Saint Agazio, patron saint of Squillace. Turn right and go down back in the green: some other curves will take you to your destination, where you can cool off and enjoy our services.
